Thanks Are Dangerous

Get ready for the onslaught of articles and parables about being grateful for things that really aren’t that great.

Yesterday my 7 year old admonished me to be thankful to have a job.  Of course, I don’t.  I have my own company because I got fed up with making other people rich and the abuse that can go along with that.

Gratitude is dangerous if it’s used as a pablum to make excuses for lousy employer behavior or to weaken our own boundaries.

Here’s a radical Thanksgiving suggestion:  instead of just treading water in this economy, make career progress by limiting gratitude to the maximum of day a per month.

The rest of the days accept the good with the bad, but don’t make excuses for being treated like a work machine or punching bag.
